Description
The Augustiner Brewery, founded in 1328 within the monastery of the Augustinian Brotherhood, is Munich's oldest independent brewery. Despite moving production over the years due to secularisation and privatisation, the brewery has maintained its reputation for producing high-quality German beer.
Among their offerings is the Augustiner Weiss beer, which is considered the best German wheat beer and is rarely exported. It has a golden orange hue with a great hazy head that lingers. The beer is fruity with less banana and spices than most other wheat beers and has medium carbonation. It is possibly the best wheat beer in the world.
The Augustiner is also highly regarded for its soft malty sweetness, clovey spiciness, citrus hops and clean finish. This classic, amber-coloured wheat beer has all the hallmarks of an Urtype Weissbier.
Augustiner weissbier is quite strong for a wheat beer, with a 5.4% ABV. It appears amber-coloured and has the usual hazy texture from the yeast. Its white foam releases a fruity aroma with apricot and banana leading the way, along with spices, bread, citrus, and honey. These flavours come from the exquisite use of top-quality hops and malts. The palate explores these flavours enticingly with a smooth and creamy taste before giving way to a bitter finish, making it very drinkable. The beer is matured in the brewery cellar vaults and then carefully cultivated to end up in-bottle fermentation.
