France is famous for the production of a wide variety of wines, each of which has its own distinct character and style. Some of the most important wine regions in France, and the French wines that they are famous for, are as follows:
Bordeaux: Bordeaux is famous for its red blends, which are typically made from the following grapes: cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc, petit verdot, and malbec. White wines from Bordeaux are often made from Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle grapes.
Burgundy: Burgundy is known for its Pinot Noir red wines, especially from the Côte d'Or region. Chardonnay is also prominent in Burgundy, producing elegant white wines like Chablis and Meursault.
Champagne: Producing world-renowned sparkling wines made primarily from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes, Champagne is France's iconic sparkling wine region.
Rhone Valley: The Rhone Valley produces both red and white wines. In the northern Rhone, Syrah dominates for red wines, while Viognier and Marsanne/Roussanne blends are popular for whites. In the southern Rhone, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre are used in red blends, while Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier are used in white blends.
Alsace: Alsace is well known for its aromatic white wines, including the Riesling, the Gewurztraminer, the Pinot Gris and the Muscat. These wines are typically dry, with expressive fruit and floral notes.
Loire Valley: The Loire Valley produces white, red and sparkling wines such as sauvignon blanc (Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé), chenin blanc (Vouvray), cabernet franc (Chinon and Saumur-Champigny) and muscadet (Melon de Bourgogne).
Provence: Provence is famous for its rosé wines made mainly from Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvèdre, Syrah and other local grape varieties. These wines are known for their pale colour, crisp acidity and refreshing fruit flavours.
