The distillery was established by Bill Samuels Sr, who developed a unique recipe that replaces rye with red winter wheat. To create each bottle of Maker's Mark, the red wax seal is applied by hand, adding to the artisanal quality of the product. The distillery produces around 1 million bottles of whiskey annually, each with its own unique flavour profile. The sour mash process used in production means that each batch is made using a portion of the previous batch's fermented mash, ensuring that every bottle is truly one-of-a-kind.
When it comes to tasting notes, Maker's Mark is a wheated bourbon whiskey that boasts a fruity and rich nose, with notes of spiced honey, mixed peels, malmsey, hazelnut, and cut fruit. The palate is full and rich, with hints of rye and spice, barley malt, nut oil, butterscotch, and vanilla. The finish is quite sweet, with notes of butterscotch and dry oak spice.
